Bien una duda me corroe, o es eso o tengo un lio mental digno de Smeagol-Gollum....
Bien, Gandalf es un maia, mas concretamente un istari, lo que significa que esta ligado a un cuerpo mortal y que ese cuerpo sufre tanto heridas como cansancio, etc..... Bien, cuando es el Gris su cuerpo muere...

¿Quien te ha dicho que no tenga cuerpo mortal? Le conceden mayores dones para usar sus poderes, pero nada más. Él no es mortal, pero su cuerpo sí, y podían haberle matado. Eso sí, no cualquier persona, claro.
