Kristin Thompson nació en 1950 en Iowa City, Iowa, U.S.A. En 1977 recibió su doctorado en estudios cinematográficos en la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison. Desde entonces ejerce como escritora a tiempo completo en las áreas del cine, literatura y Egiptología. Ha sido profesora invitada en la Universidad de Iowa, Universidad de Indiana, Universidad de Estocolmo, Universidad de Amsterdam y la Universidad de Oxford.

Thompson se convirtió en fan de J.R.R. Tolkien en 1965, y desde 1984 es miembro de la Tolkien and Fantasy Society en la Universidad de Wisconsin. En 1987 presentó un artículo, “The Hobbit as a Part of The Red Book of Westmarch” ("El Hobbit como una Parte del Libro Rojo de la Frontera del Oeste") en la Decimooctava Conferencia de la Mythopoeic Society, y fue posteriormente publicada en Mythlore.

Thompson ha publicado multitud de trabajos en el campo del estudio cinematográfico, incluyendo The Frodo Franchise: The Lord of the Rings and Modern Hollywood. Ha publicado reseñas sobre libros acerca de las películas de Peter Jackson en Tolkien Studies III y IV.

Thompson es la archivista del P. G. Wodehouse Archive del Wodehouse Estate y es miembro de la Expedición Británica a Tell el-Amarna.
