Colección de estudios realizados por diferentes autores sobre distintos aspectos de la obra de J.R.R. Tolkien, que abarca desde El señor de los Anillos hasta El Silmarillion. Si bien se trata de estudios especializados para cuya comprensión es necesario haber leído la Historia de la Tierra Media y estar familiarizado con la terminología asociada, según opiniones de los lectores, los artículos están muy bien escritos y carecen de la, muchas veces pesada, "jerga" académica.

Junto a los ensayos publicados, requiere una mención especial la presentación que realiza Carl Hostetter de la edición que el propio Tolkien hizo de Sir Orfeo, un texto prácticamente imposible de encontrar hasta su publicación en este volumen.

Tolkien Studies es una publicación anual en la que se recoge el trabajo de investigación sobre J.R.R. Tolkien y su obra. Esta es la primera publicación de investigación editada por la prensa académica con el propósito de presentar el creciente cuerpo de comentarios críticos y de investigaciones acerca de los escritos de Tolkien.
